From Crisis to a Life Rebuilt: Alysha’s Journey to Stability, Motherhood, and a Future Full of Possibility

We are always so grateful to hear back from clients. Our dedicated Community Integrations staff, that includes our Foundational Community Supports (FCS) supportive housing team, work tirelessly with individuals to help them find the housing and support services needed to live healthy and productive lives back in the community. It was inspiring for all of us to hear back from Alysha on her progress in life with her son.

Alysha shared:

“December 23, 2023 is the day my son was born and the day I began my recovery. It’s a date I will always carry with me.

When I first connected to services (King County HARPS program, a grant program run by Community Integrations Department at Pioneer, and then referred into Pioneer’s FCS Supportive Housing and FCS Supportive Employment), I had a newborn and was living in my car. I was barely out of treatment, trying to figure out how to take care of my son while rebuilding my life from the ground up. Everything felt uncertain, but I knew I couldn’t go backwards.

Before my son was born, I was on a path leading straight to prison or death. His birth changed the direction of my life.

I was referred to Pioneer Human Services’ HARPS program when my situation was at its lowest. Jennifer McPherson, director of Pioneer’s Community Integrations, stepped in because things were that serious. I was determined to make it for my son and myself, but I didn’t know where to start. She helped me take that first step.

From there, I connected with Kelly Phelps, my Supportive Housing specialist through Pioneer Human Services’ FCS program. That’s when things really began to change for the better.

Looking back, I’m amazed at how far I’ve come. Time has moved quickly, but every step, every challenge, and every small win has built the life I have today. I used to hope for better days. What I have now has exceeded those hopes.

Today, I’m proud to be a mother. I’ve faced adversity, made hard sacrifices, and kept going when it would have been easier not to. I wake up motivated, working in a career I truly enjoy. My son and I have a home of our own, something that once felt out of reach. I recently purchased a reliable SUV, which represents the independence and stability I’ve worked hard to build.

One of my biggest accomplishments has been completing a full year of treatment and counseling. It wasn’t easy. There were moments of doubt, but I was never alone.

I was supported by attorneys, peer advocates, parent allies, counselors, medical providers, and colleagues. Through Pioneer Human Services, I was able to secure housing for my son and me using a Shelter Plus Care voucher.

Kelly has been a steady source of encouragement and accountability. Getting housing was a major milestone, but maintaining it and continuing to grow has taken ongoing work. She has been there through all of it, reminding me of what I’m capable of even when I struggled to see it myself.

Pioneer Human Services didn’t just help me stabilize – they helped me build a foundation rooted in accountability, growth, and real opportunity.

Today, I’ve moved out of my voucher unit and into a place of my own. I have a great job, and I’ve transitioned out of services. I’m standing on my own, but I will always be grateful for the chance I was given and the people who helped me get here.

These programs didn’t just help me get by. They helped prepare me for a different life. One where I face challenges instead of avoiding them. One where I keep going, even when things get hard. One where I believe in my future.

Today, I feel proud. Not just for rebuilding my life, but for creating something stronger, more stable, and full of possibility.

And I know this is only the beginning.”
